Dental Treatments and Solutions for Stained and Discolored Teeth

Have you been a coffee drinker or a smoker for many years? If so, you may have noticed extreme difficulty with keeping your teeth white. Perpetually scrubbing and brushing your teeth may deliver minor results, but traditional toothpaste is not really going to be very effective as far as whitening severely stained teeth. However, there are dental treatments and methods that can be employed to restore one’s teeth to their original, pristine appearance.

The most common method is simply to have a dental hygienist perform a routine cleaning with a fluoride treatment. This is a much more pronounced method of cleaning than merely brushing your teeth which is why it can deliver excellent results. However, for teeth that are severely stained this method is not the most successful process. That is why more advanced teeth whitening treatments should be employed.

The most popular method employed is cosmetic dental bleaching. This is a process that is performed by a dentist and can take several appointments depending upon how stained the teeth may be. Usually, the procedure involves placing a fluoride or bleaching solution in a mouthpiece and holding in the mouth for upwards of a half an hour. As this is going on, the dentist will heat the fluoride solution with a laser. This, in turn, dramatically increases the whitening effect of the process.

In most instances, the cosmetic dentist will supply his or her patients with an at-home kit that will be used for follow-up tooth whitening. This is particularly important in situations where the teeth’s stains are quite pronounced. Of course, it is also necessary to have a complete cleaning performed prior to any bleaching process since you do not want to bleach tartar and plaque as this would do very little good. When cleaning and bleaching are combined, they provide the perfect solution for stained and discolored teeth.
