Invisalign® vs. Porcelain Veneers

December 08, 2011 @ 02:34 AM -- by Dr. Jean Barthman

Not everyone is born with a perfect smile. In fact, even if someone were born with perfectly straight and even teeth, maintaining the health and appearance of those teeth can be difficult. It’s for that reason that people visit with a skilled Redwood City cosmetic dentist. Doing so will allow them to undergo the necessary dental treatments to help enhance the appearance of their smile and ensure the health of their teeth and gums.

Getting the Smile of Your Dreams

There are plenty of cosmetic, general, and restorative dentistry options out there for giving patients the smiles that they have always wanted. In many cases, getting the smile of your dreams means have teeth that are nice and even.

In the past, this could be achieved almost exclusively through orthodontics. Now, however, there are two great options for having a smile that looks its best: porcelain veneers and Invisalign®. The two options have their own benefits and applications, so let’s briefly examine them right now.

About Porcelain Veneers

Redwood City porcelain veneers are a versatile and popular cosmetic dentistry solution. A porcelain veneer is a thin shell of a dental ceramic that is affixed to the front portion of the tooth. When in place, the porcelain veneer will conceal stains, chips, and cracks, and they can also help improve the overall appearance of the tooth. That means slightly uneven or misaligned teeth can be straightened in a jiffy. It’s for this reason that many people refer to porcelain veneers are instant orthodontics.

How Porcelain Veneers Work

The porcelain veneers procedure is generally quite simple. First a small amount of tooth material is removed from the surface of the tooth (generally one-half of a millimeter). An impression is then taken of the tooth so a porcelain veneer can be created. Once crafted, the veneer is simply adhered in place. Simple as that. Even simpler, there are cases where patients can get porcelain veneers without any prepping for the tooth. These prepless wonders are known as LUMINEERS®.

About Invisalign®

Staying at the forefront with other Redwood City dentists can be a challenge, though we strive at all times. One way we stay at the cutting edge is by offering Invisalign®. These invisible braces are the way of the future: a convenient, unnoticeable option for orthodontic treatment. That’s right: you can get your teeth straightened without anyone noticing.

How Invisalign® Works

The Invisalign® system uses clear plastic aligners to straighten the teeth rather than metal brackets and wires. These aligner trays are custom fitted to the patient and are worn at all times save for when eating, drinking, or cleaning the teeth. Every two weeks, a patient gets a new aligner to help gradually reposition the teeth just like braces would. All the benefits of braces, none of the hassle.

Which option is the best for me?

There is no way we can answer that online, of course. You need to visit our Redwood City dental spa for a full consultation. Some patients with minor misalignments may be better served by porcelain veneers, while other may best benefit from Invisalign®. Whatever the case, know that we will always help you make the best decision for your long-term dental health.
