The Myths and the Facts: Zoom!® Tooth Whitening and Sensitivity

A woman reclining in a dental chair, smiling to reveal her beautiful teeth after tooth whiteningContrary to what some people claim, long-term tooth sensitivity is not a common side effect or risk of professional teeth whitening, especially when a trusted brand such as the Zoom!® system is used by an experienced dentist such as Jean E. Barthman, D.D.S. While over-the-counter whitening systems can cause tooth sensitivity due to enamel erosion among other problems if used improperly, professional teeth whitening is extremely safe, gentle, and effective. It isn’t risk free, of course - no medical treatment is, even if its purpose is solely cosmetic - but among proper candidates, professional teeth whitening is unlikely to pose any long-term threats to their oral health.

Note the key phrase “among proper candidates” in the above sentence. Dr. Barthman carefully screens patients to ensure that they are suitable candidates for Zoom!® teeth whitening and therefore highly unlikely to experience any adverse effects from treatment, including increased tooth sensitivity. Nevertheless, she does discuss the possible connection between Zoom!® tooth whitening and tooth sensitivity during consultations at her Redwood City, CA dental practice so that patients can make informed decisions about whether to proceed with treatment.

Are you a good candidate for Zoom!® teeth whitening? To find out, please schedule your initial consultation with Dr. Barthman today.

The Connection between Zoom!® Teeth Whitening and Tooth Sensitivity

Increased tooth sensitivity is a common side effect of any professional teeth whitening treatment, including Zoom!® teeth whitening; however, it generally subsides within 24 hours. It is important to note that many patients do not experience any increased tooth sensitivity whatsoever after teeth whitening treatment, and that some experience only minor sensitivity that resolves itself within eight to ten hours. In rare cases, tooth sensitivity may last for up to 48 hours. If tooth sensitivity lasts longer than that, then patients should contact our practice immediately.

Long-term tooth sensitivity after professional teeth whitening treatment is very rare. When it does occur, it is usually because treatment was performed on a patient who suffered from tooth sensitivity prior to treatment. This is why Dr. Barthman is meticulous in screening patients during the consultation phase, recommending alternative whitening treatments such as porcelain veneers and crowns to patients with sensitive teeth.

Teeth whitening treatment is not recommended to patients who have enamel damage or teeth that are otherwise structurally damaged. It is also not recommended to patients with periodontal disease or other serious oral health problems. These patients are far more likely to experience tooth sensitivity, pain, or other adverse side effects as a result of treatment.

It is also extremely important that patients follow post-procedural instructions provided to them by Dr. Barthman to the absolute letter to keep the risk of tooth sensitivity to a minimum and optimize their odds of achieving the best possible results.
