Treatment Options for Malocclusion

teeth with malocclusion vs. teeth with normal occlusionOcclusion refers to the position and alignment of the teeth. When the teeth are properly aligned, they fit easily inside the mouth without spacing concerns. Teeth that are properly aligned have room to sit within their socket, so they should not be crooked or twisted. The result is a straight, even, and attractive smile.

Unfortunately, many individuals suffer from malocclusion problems. Malocclusion issues compromise the appearance of the smile by causing overcrowding, gaps, and/or crooked teeth. Advanced malocclusion problems can impact oral functions as well. Experienced dentist Jean Barthman offers treatment for malocclusion to give her Redwood City, CA, patients the straight, healthy smile they desire. Here we go over some of the most common treatments for malocclusion.

Braces

Braces are one of the most trusted treatments for malocclusion problems. Braces can treat a wide range of alignment concerns, including:

  • Crossbite
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Gapped teeth
  • Open bite
  • Overcrowded teeth
  • Crooked, twisted, or turned teeth

Braces treat malocclusion problems by applying subtle but consistent pressure to the teeth and jaw. Pressure is applied by placing a series of brackets and wires along the teeth. As treatment progresses, the wires are routinely tightened, so that the teeth and jaw are continually encouraged to shift into their proper position.

The biggest benefit of braces treatment is its proven effectiveness. Braces have been around for many years and they are consistently able to correct minor to severe malocclusion problems to give patients a more attractive smile that functions properly. The biggest drawback of braces is their appearance. Traditional braces use metal brackets and wires that stand out against the teeth, making them impossible to conceal.

Invisalign

Another popular option for malocclusion problems is Invisalign. Invisalign works in a similar fashion to braces, applying pressure to the teeth and jaw to encourage gradual movement until they are in their proper position. What sets Invisalign apart from traditional braces is how the pressure is applied. During Invisalign treatment, our Redwood City patients progress through a series of clear plastic aligners, and each set fits slightly differently.

The treatment timeline for Invisalign is about the same as traditional braces, but offers the added benefit of being more comfortable, discreet, and convenient. Invisalign aligners are virtually impossible to see, earning them the nickname of invisible braces. And aligner trays can be removed for eating, brushing, and flossing, so they make oral care easy. The one potential downside of Invisalign is that they are not effective at treating more advanced malocclusion problems.

Porcelain Veneers

A final option for malocclusion problems is porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells that bond to the front of the teeth to conceal aesthetic flaws and create the appearance of a straight, white, attractive smile. Because porcelain veneers are a cosmetic treatment, they are only suitable for select malocclusion problems. Porcelain veneers do not correct the bite or the position of the teeth, so they only address cosmetic malocclusion problems, or those that do not compromise oral health or functions.
