What Is Invisalign®?
For patients with orthodontic problems – crowded, crooked teeth, gaps between the teeth, and other bite problems –Invisalign® can be an ideal way to straighten the teeth. Invisalign® works through a series of aligners that gradually move the teeth into their proper alignment. Since the aligners are removable, comfortable, and practically invisible, Invisalign® treatment is the most convenient orthodontic treatment available.
If you would like to learn more about having your teeth straightened with Invisalign® and you live in Palo Alto, San Mateo, Redwood City, Menlo Park, the Penninsula or the Bay Area, contact Jean Barthman, D.D.S., to schedule a consultation.
Benefits of Invisalign®
The Invisalign® system offers patients many of the benefits of braces and few of the disadvantages. The aligners effectively straighten the teeth without painful adjustments or uncomfortable metal brackets. Plus, the aligners are so inconspicuous that many people refer to Invisalign® as “invisible braces”, and most people will not be able to tell you are wearing them. This makes Invisalign® an excellent treatment for adults and teens. The aligners are also removable, so you can brush and floss with ease and enjoy all your favorite foods. Since office visits are only necessary approximately every six weeks, Invisalign® is convenient for patients traveling from Palo Alto, San Mateo, and surrounding areas to our office in Redwood City.
Invisalign® is beneficial to overall oral health. Crooked or crowded teeth can be difficult to thoroughly clean - increasing the risk of dental decay, gum disease, and even tooth loss. Invisalign® treatment moves teeth into the proper placement to promote healthy, clean teeth and gums for life.
The Invisalign® Process
The Invisalign® process begins with an initial consultation, in which Dr. Barthman will assess your smile to determine if Invisalign® is an appropriate treatment for you. If it is, you will return for a second visit for records of your teeth to be taken. During this appointment, Dr. Barthman will take a mold of your teeth. She then sends this mold to the Invisalign® laboratory, where lab technicians will use advanced computer software to produce an image of the teeth in their final position. Dr. Barthman maps out the entire treatment so that each set of aligners moves the teeth gradually closer to this position. This allows you to view your own personal before and after images before even starting your treatment.
During your Invisalign® treatment, you will wear each set of aligners for two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each Invisalign® aligner, your teeth will glide into place until they have straightened into their final position. Throughout your Invisalign® treatment, you will visit our Redwood City office every six weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time for Invisalign® averages 9 to 15 months and the average number of aligners needed is between 18 and 30, but both vary from patient to patient. After completing Invisalign® treatment, many patients receive teeth whitening to brighten their new smiles.
