Coffee and Red Wine After Teeth Whitening

May 02, 2019 @ 01:25 PM -- by Dr. Jean Barthman

Before and after teeth whitening treatmentDr. Jean Barthman is a trusted name in cosmetic and restorative dentistry here in Redwood City, CA. She offers advanced teeth whitening and other procedures that enhance the beauty of the smile. She also gives patients the practical advice they need to maintain the results of treatment.

With that in mind, we want to consider the effects of coffee and red wine on your smile after teeth whitening treatment. Many people undergo professional teeth whitening to remove stains caused by coffee and wine, but as you’ll learn, one whitening treatment isn’t protection from future tooth discoloration.

Can My Teeth Still Stain After Whitening Treatment?

Yes.

Teeth whitening bleaches the tooth enamel rather than removing the stains from a tooth per se. Given this fact, it’s possible to have stained teeth again after you’ve undergone over-the-counter or professional teeth whitening treatment. This is why we always tell teeth whitening patients at our Redwood City practice to be mindful of what they eat and drink. Stains and discoloration can happen down the road.

Thankfully there are a few practical oral hygiene tips that can help combat stains as well as tooth decay and acidic dental erosion.

Tips for Drinking Coffee After Teeth Whitening

Consider these tips to keep your smile stain-free after some coffee:

  • Cut the Darkness with Milk - Whether it’s cream, skim milk, or almond milk, adding a little bit of milk to your coffee can cut the acidity and reduce the amount of staining it does. Consider a little splash of milk if you drink coffee regularly.
  • Use a Straw for Iced Coffee - When drinking iced coffee, a drinking straw can make a major difference. The straw will bypass your front teeth, which means prominent stains will be less of an issue for you.
  • Drink Water After Having Coffee - Drinking water and rinsing out your mouth can clear away the stain-causing residue when you’ve had some coffee.
  • Brush Your Teeth 30 Minutes Later - Your tooth enamel will be a little soft from drinking coffee due to the acidity. Wait 30 minutes before brushing your teeth so there’s no trace of coffee left in your mouth.

Tips for Drinking Red Wine After Teeth Whitening

Consider these tips to keep your teeth bright after a glass of wine:

  • Go Lighter If You Can - We know reds go with certain meals and dishes better than whites, but you may want to side with white wines most of the time just to reduce the amount of staining you’ll experience in the long run.
  • Rinse Your Mouth with Water - Have a glass of water handy while drinking red wine. Sip and subtly swish to help remove the stain-causing residue of the red wine.
  • Brush Your Teeth 30 Minutes Later - As with coffee, wine’s acidity will soften your tooth enamel slightly. Consider brushing your teeth 30 minutes after your last sip of wine to help remove any liquid that could potentially cause stains.

Touch-Up Teeth Whitening Treatments

Whether it’s due to coffee and wine or the natural aging process, your teeth will likely need a touch-up whitening session to look its best. Never fear. We’ve got you covered at our Redwood City dental care center. Another teeth whitening session can work wonders.
