How Effective is Whitening Mouthwash?
The color of the teeth is often a big concern for patients. Most are eager to show-off a bright, white smile, but it is more common for the teeth to appear dull and aged. Many people would describe their tooth color as more of a gray or yellow as opposed to white. Surface stains also tend to be a problem when it comes to the appearance of the smile. Teeth whitening brightens the color of the teeth and eliminates surface stains to provide patients with a more attractive smile. However, it is important for patients to consider what type of teeth whitening product is best to use. Whitening mouthwash offers our Redwood, City, CA, dental patients a convenient teeth-whitening option, but just how effective can these products be? Cosmetic dentist Jean E. Barthman discusses the use of whitening mouthwash and how her patients can best achieve the beautiful, white smile they desire.
Whitening Mouthwash Results
Over-the-counter teeth whitening products have become extremely popular in recent years. Just about everyone wants to improve the appearance of their smile, and over-the-counter products seem to be the easiest way to achieve that goal. While whitening products come in many forms, whitening mouthwashes are particularly common. The idea that a quick swish of mouthwash can provide a whiter smile is great. Unfortunately, that is not exactly how whitening mouthwashes work.
Whitening mouthwashes contain a bleaching agent – most commonly, hydrogen peroxide. However, the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in a whitening mouthwash is very low, because it needs to be safe for over-the-counter sales. While whitening mouthwashes may improve tooth color, people should not expect instant results, nor should they expect them to be dramatic. If a whitening mouthwash is used regularly as directed, it may improve the color of the teeth by a shade or two over the duration of several weeks. One potential downside of whitening mouthwashes is that they may cause increased tooth sensitivity. To avoid causing damage to the outer layer of tooth enamel, it is a good idea to take periodic breaks from using a whitening mouthwash.
Consider Professional Teeth Whitening
Patients who are looking to significantly improve tooth color and erase even deep-set stains are better-suited for professional teeth whitening. Professional teeth whitening is much quicker and more convenient than most people would imagine, and it provides nearly instant results. Dr. Barthman offers her patients BriteSmile® teeth whitening treatment. BriteSmile® improves tooth color by an average of 6-9 shades, and treatment can be completed in about an hour. During treatment Dr. Barthman applies a bleaching gel to the surface of the teeth, being sure to avoid the sensitive soft tissues of the mouth. The teeth are then exposed to a blue dental light that activates the bleaching agents. We expose the teeth to this light in three 20-minute cycles. BriteSmile® treatment drastically improves tooth color without altering the structure of the teeth, making it a much more beneficial option than a whitening mouthwash.
