Close up of a bright, white smile Dental discoloration is a common concern. Even when you maintain perfect oral hygiene, beverages, foods, aging, and other factors will eventually lead to some tooth staining. Fortunately, teeth whitening can reduce discoloration and give you a healthier-looking smile. While there are a plethora of whitening options to choose from, they are not all created equal. Some require longer treatment times, while other over-the-counter products can have unpleasant side effects.

Now you can enjoy instant teeth whitening results with BriteSmile® at our Redwood City, CA, practice. Jean E. Barthman, D.D.S., is proud to offer this treatment, which is safe, quick, and produces incredible results.

How Much Can BriteSmile Lighten Your Teeth?

In just one hour, BriteSmile can whiten your teeth by six to nine shades. In contrast, take-home trays, strips, and toothpastes take several weeks to achieve their results, which may not be as dramatic. Furthermore, these products may contain unregulated levels of peroxide, which can cause sensitivity and even permanent tooth damage.

The amount of whitening differs from patient to patient. The results you can expect will depend on the type of and degree of staining, your age, and your particular response to treatment. For optimal results, you should receive a thorough cleaning before undergoing teeth whitening.

What to Expect After Treatment

After your BriteSmile regimen at our Redwood City office, you may experience some dental sensitivity, particularly in response to cold temperatures. This discomfort should fade within one to three days. Longer-lasting and more serious side effects are very rare.

How to Maintain Your Sparkling Smile

The results of BriteSmile can last several years. At the same time, there are steps you can take to keep your smile looking white and healthy:

  • Avoid foods and drinks that produce stains: Typically, the darker the food, the more likely it is to stain your teeth. Common culprits include red wine, coffee, tea, tomato sauce, soy sauce, curry, and berries.
  • Drink out of a straw: Using a straw can help prevent stains since the beverage will bypass your teeth.
  • Avoid acidic foods and drinks: Even light-colored foods can contribute to dental discoloration if they are high in acid. Acid can start to erode your dental enamel, exposing the more porous and less stain-resistant tissue beneath. Acidic foods include sodas, white wine, fruit juice, citrus, tomatoes, and sports drinks.
  • Drink plenty of water: When you do choose to indulge in stain-producing foods, be sure to drink lots of water at the same time. This can help to flush away the colored molecules, rather than keeping them trapped against your teeth.
  • Practice good dental hygiene: Brushing twice a day and flossing daily will decrease your risk for stains and cavities at the same time. You should also visit our office at least twice a year for a cleaning and checkup.

When the results of your BriteSmile treatment begin to fade, it is usually safe to undergo another round of whitening. Talk to Dr. Barthman about how often you should schedule touch-ups.
