Signs You May Need a Filling

Tooth-colored fillingFillings are a restorative dentistry treatment that repair damage to the tooth’s outer layer of enamel. Fillings restore teeth compromised by decay or minor injuries.

Many people are not aware they need a filling until they are told at a routine dental exam and cleaning. However, there are often early signs that a filling is necessary. Here, Dr. Jean E. Barthman presents the top signs you may need a filling at her Redwood City, CA, dental practice. Knowing when to seek dental treatment is vital to repairing damage before it progresses to a more serious complication.

You Are Experiencing Tooth Sensitivity

The teeth consist of multiple layers. The outermost layer of a tooth is a hard mineral compound called enamel. Beneath the enamel is a softer layer of dentin and beneath the dentin is the pulp of the tooth. The pulp consists of sensitive nerves and tissues.

Tooth decay and dental damage expose the sensitive inner layers of a tooth and frequently result in tooth sensitivity. Tooth sensitivity is likely when the teeth are exposed to severe hot or cold temperatures or when biting or chewing. Heightened tooth sensitivity is one of the most common signs that a dental filling is needed.

You Can See a Dark Spot or Hole

Depending on which tooth has developed a cavity and where the cavity has formed, it may be visible. Cavities could look like small holes or indentions on the teeth. Cavities sometimes create dark spots or small areas of discoloration. Any changes to the appearance of the tooth should be reported to Dr. Barthman.

The Tooth Feels Rough

Dental decay occurs when sugars, acids, and bacteria dissolve tooth enamel. The areas of loss are frequently uneven and rough. Even if a cavity is not visible, our Redwood City patients may be able to feel it. If a tooth feels rough or has sharp edges, a filling could be necessary.

Sometimes cavities form on the side of a tooth (between the teeth). If dental floss breaks when flossing, that is a potential sign that a rough area of decay has formed.

Your Tooth Is Damaged

Minor oral injuries may also benefit from placement of a dental filling. Visible dental damage, including chips, cracks, or fractures, should be examined to determine if a dental filling is necessary.

An Old Filling Is Damaged

Fillings repair tooth decay and dental damage to alleviate discomfort, restore oral functions, and prevent further damage. Fillings are made of durable materials that should last for many years. Over time, fillings can wear down or become damaged. If an old filling is loose or appears cracked, a new filling is probably required.

Is a Filling Enough?

Dental fillings repair minor to moderate areas of erosion, damage, or decay. When dental complications are advanced, dental fillings may not offer sufficient treatment. Our Redwood City patients may benefit from a dental crown or root canal therapy if they are experiencing severe tooth pain and inflammation, or if the tooth is significantly damaged.
