Is It Worth Getting Invisalign as an Adult?
Are you wondering whether you’re too old for Invisalign®? At our dental practice in Redwood City, CA, age is just one factor we consider before recommending this treatment option. The truth is that some of our patients might be too young, but adults of any age can be good candidates for Invisalign. Read on to learn why.
Understanding Orthodontic Treatment in Children and Teens vs. Adults
Invisalign has evolved since its development and is considered safe and effective for children as young as six years old. In fact, it’s often an integral tool in early orthodontics–a phased treatment that sets the stage for more effective results down the line.
Clear aligners are incredibly effective in children and teens, and the same can be said for braces. The reason? The jaw is softer and more malleable until the late teen years.
Rest assured that adult teeth can still be effectively straightened with Invisalign. Your treatment timeline might just be longer than a younger patient. That said, adults often have easier (and in the end, quicker) treatment.
What Are Some Benefits for Adult Invisalign Patients?
Two of the biggest factors we’ll evaluate during patient consultations at our Redwood City practice is whether they will be responsible and committed. Unlike braces, that are not removable, Invisalign’s trays can be damaged or misplaced, or patients can simply forget to wear them. Adults tend to demonstrate:
Greater Level of Commitment
In order to be effective, Invisalign trays need to be worn 20-22 hours a day. They should only be removed for eating and drinking anything other than water, as well as cleaning your teeth and the aligners. Generally speaking, adult patients have a higher degree of commitment to their treatment. When younger patients fail to wear their trays for the prescribed amount of time, the treatment is less effective and it will take longer to achieve the desired results.
Greater Level of Responsibility
Even if our younger patients are committed to their results, they’re more likely to damage or misplace their Invisalign trays. Teens’ treatment plans actually include a greater number of trays because of that reason.
In contrast, we trust that our adult patients take better care of their trays. You will need to place them in a hard plastic case when they’re not in use. Patients should make sure to keep track of the trays so they don’t get lost but if you do require replacements, of course, we’re happy to help.
