Can Porcelain Veneers Be Whitened?

Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells that adhere to the facial surface of the teeth to conceal discoloration, dental stains, and other cosmetic flaws. Veneers completely transform the smile by making the teeth appear whiter, brighter, and more symmetrical. While veneers are resistant to dental stains, they may eventually become discolored.

At my dental practice, which serves Redwood City, CA, and surrounding areas, our dentists are frequently asked, “Can porcelain veneers be whitened?” Here we discuss veneers and what can be done to enhance their appearance when they become dull or discolored.

How Do Veneers Respond to Teeth Whitening Treatment?

Porcelain veneers are fabricated using ceramic materials that are resistant to stains. Most patients enjoy their veneers for many years before they notice a change in their appearance. Once porcelain veneers become discolored or develop unsightly stains, it is natural for patients to wonder if they can be whitened with over-the-counter or professional teeth-whitening products.

Porcelain veneers do not respond to teeth whitening treatment the same way as natural teeth. Teeth whitening works by applying a bleaching agent that works its way into the pores of tooth enamel to lift away stains and discoloration. Bleaching agents do not work on porcelain.

People who attempt to whiten their porcelain veneers may be more dissatisfied with the appearance of their smile after teeth whitening treatment. The problem is that teeth whitening will enhance the color of natural teeth adjacent to veneers, but not the veneers themselves. As a result, veneers are likely to look more dull and discolored in comparison to the treated teeth.

How Can I Make My Veneers Look Whiter?

Although porcelain veneers do not respond to teeth whitening treatment, there are things patients can do to enhance the appearance of their restorations. When discoloration or staining is minor, professional dental cleaning may provide the enhancement a patient desires.

Older veneers with more advanced discoloration likely will not respond to a deep cleaning. Instead, replacement may be the best way for our patients to restore a brighter and whiter smile. Porcelain veneers replacement is a straightforward procedure at our Redwood City office that is very similar to initial veneers treatment.

Tips for Preserving the Color of Veneers

Porcelain veneers are made of strong, durable materials that resist stains and discoloration. With proper care, veneers can last 15 years or more before they begin to look discolored or replacement is required. To preserve the color of veneers, we recommend these tips:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss regularly
  • Schedule routine dental exams and cleanings at least twice yearly
  • Limit consumption of deeply colored foods and beverages
  • Brush the teeth or rinse the mouth with water after consuming foods and beverages with the potential to stain the teeth, such as tea, coffee, and wine
